Announcements/Features

Abrams to lead convocation ceremony. The 2010-11 academic year will officially begin at 4:30 pm. Aug. 18 with a convocation ceremony featuring Gene Abrams, professor, Mathematics, and a presidential teaching scholar. (More)

Centennial Hall dedication scheduled. A dedication ceremony opening the renovated Science Building at UCCS and re-naming it Centennial Hall is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 19. Speakers, guests and tours will highlight the re-opening festivities, celebrating the conclusion of the $17.1 million project. (More)

Alum estate to benefit English Department. A woman whose Air Force career taught her to stand up to those in positions of authority left her estate to the Department of English. (More)

2010 Kane Scholars reception Aug. 17. The 25 recipients of the Kane Family Scholarships will be honored at 6 p.m. Aug 17 at Pikes Peak Community College. Tony Kinkel, president, PPCC, will host the event, assisted by Pam Shockley-Zalabak, chancellor, UCCS, several regional community college executives and executives from the Kane Family Foundation. CU scientists secure $847 million in research funding. University of Colorado faculty researchers on four campuses secured more than $847 million in sponsored research funding in fiscal year 2009-10 to advance scientific work in laboratories and in the field, remaining highly competitive among peers despite the economic downturn. First class of Marquez Scholars attend summer institute. Twenty area high school students escaped the city's summer heat July 19 through 28. But it was not all fun and games for the first group of Marquez Scholars at UCCS. (More)

Regents oppose three 2010 ballot measures. The University of Colorado Board of Regents passed a resolution July 16 opposing Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101, which Colorado voters will decide in November. (More)

CU garners $140.8 million in private support for fiscal year 2009-10. Private funders supported University of Colorado people, places, and programs, to the tune of $140.8 million in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010 according to unaudited numbers. Donors gave more than $5.4 million to UCCS through the CU Foundation. (More)

New booster club to benefit basketball teams. As part of the new Mountain Lion Athletic Association, and in an effort to build scholarships for members of men's and women's Mountain Lion basketball teams, a new booster club was recently formed for UCCS faculty and staff. (More)

The Merry Wives of Windsor at Rock Ledge Ranch. Through Aug. 28, Theaterworks will perform one of Shakespeare's most popular works begining at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday on Colorado Springs' western edge. (More)

UCCS to receive Steel & Silver Series trophy Sept. 22. Between games of a Sept. 22 soccer doubleheader, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak will be awarded the trophy for winning the 2009-10 Steel & Silver Series.UCCS wins Steel and Silver Trophy. Business earns honors from local newspaper. Readers of the Colorado Springs Business Journal selected winners in 82 categories as part of the newspaper's annual "Best of Colorado Springs Business" edition published July 23. (More)

Barrett selected to Better Business Bureau board. The Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado recently selected five new members to its board of directors. (More)

Professor publishes parent guide. Sandy Wurtele, professor, Psychology, recently published "Out of Harm's Way: A Parent's Guide to Protecting Young Children from Sexual Abuse." (More)

Ryan named Employee of the Quarter. Claudia Ryan, operations manager, Public Safety, was recently named Employee of the Quarter in recognition of her professional and personal skills. (More)

Matrix Center honored. The Colorado Springs Diversity Forum honored the Matrix Center for Advancement of Social Equity and Inclusion based at UCCS with its Inclusion Award Aug. 10. (More)

Mary Mack Greene, who served as an assistant professor of geography and environmental studies from 1991 to 2000 died July 16 in Lake Oswego, Ore. (More)

Robert W. Wright. Former Office of Admissions and Records staff member Robert W. Wright died Aug. 4 at age 89. Services were Aug. 9.(More)

Who's New/Changes

Retirees represent more than 300 years campus experience. Thirteen campus faculty and staff members announced retirements in June and July. (More)
