Announcements / Features

Science renamed, rededication scheduled. A dedication ceremony opening the renovated Science Building at UCCS and re-naming it Centennial Hall is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 19. Speakers, guests and tours will highlight the re-opening festivities, celebrating the conclusion of the $17.1 million project. (More)

Atrium named in honor of El Pomar. An atrium in the Science & Engineering Building was named in recognition of a $1 million gift during a July 1 ceremony. (More)

Software helps drug abusers recover. A social networking tool developed jointly by UCCS and Syberenety LLC may soon be available to help recovering addicts stay connected to medical providers and personal support networks. (More)

UCCS, CU leaders stress education in Pueblo. More than 150 Pueblo-area youth and their families received a college is possible message from UCCS and CU Boulder leaders June 29. (More)

Money Bus offers cash counsel. It wasn't a bus load of money that arrived on campus July 9 but the Money Bus, a project of the National Association of Personal Finance Advisors Consumer Education Foundation. (More)

Regents affirm nondiscrimination policy, fight for weapons ban. Responding to University of Colorado community members who say they've experienced or witnessed discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression, the Board of Regents on June 24, passed a resolution restating its commitment to prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. The Regents also voted to fight a ruling that CU could not prevent weapons on campuses. See more information from the CU System Newsletter here.

William Wylie exhibit opens at GOCA 121. The UCCS Gallery of Contemporary Art location at 121 S. Tejon will begin a new exhibit of photographic works by William Wylie beginning with a 6-9 p.m. Aug. 6 public reception. GOCA 121 is open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday. (More)

Alumni sponsors Denver Botanic Gardens night. The UCCS Alumni and Friends Association will join with other CU campus alumni groups to host an evening of music, sculpture and nature July 30 at the Denver Botanic Gardens. (More)

Daphne Greenwood, professor, Economics, recently published "Local Economic Development in the 21^st Century: Quality of Life and Sustainability" with Richard P.F. Holt of Southern Oregon University. (More)

The Colorado Geographic Alliance based UCCS will receive a special achievement in geographic information system award July 14 at the 30th Annual Esri International User Conference. Esri, a software manufacturer, selected the Colorado Geographic Alliance from more than 300,000 organizations worldwide for its innovative use of technology to improve geography education. (More)

In Memory

Wisner remembered for kindness, patience. A June 28 campus memorial service for former dean of students Ron Wisner drew more than 40 people to the Kraemer Family Library to reminisce or to learn about the long-time former staff member. (More)

Who's New/Changes

Who's New in June. Four new staff members joined UCCS in June. They are: Phyllis Weeres, UTeach program coordinator, College of Education, June 1. Christopher Bell, Excel oral communication director, Student Success, June 1. Catherine Malone, nurse, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, June 16. Greg Shelton, program manager, College of Business, June 1.

Brown named assistant dean. Karen Brown, financial assistant, College of Education, was promoted to assistant dean for finance and administration, College of Education, effective July 1. The change was announced by Peg Bacon, provost. Brown will report to David Fennel, interim dean, College of Education whose appointment was also effective July 1.
