$1 million Kaiser Permanente grant to stimulate health care jobs, education. As Colorado faces historic unemployment rates, a new partnership between Kaiser Permanente and four state colleges and universities will bring hundreds of new health care jobs to southern Colorado. (More)

Senior named Student Leader of the Year. The Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation in partnership with the Boettcher Foundation named UCCS senior Jacqueline Bell as the Colorado Leadership Alliance Student Leader of the Year. (More)

Campus to host budding scientists and inventors. Hundreds of southern Colorado youths in grades 5-12 will compete at UCCS Saturday as part of a regional Science Olympiad tournament designed to spur interest in science, math and engineering fields. (More)

Waste not want not. A “Mount Trashmore” event this week showed that 50 percent of what is in UCCS trash cans could have been recycled, including plastic bottles, cans and paper. See one day’s worth of campus trash and recycling here.

Security training a concern. CU System campuses are implementing processes to raise awareness of computer information privacy and security prompting Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak to issue a memo on the subject to the campus community. (More)

Vice chancellors give budget initiative updates. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is “open for business,” Martin Wood, vice chancellor, University Advancement told more than 75 faculty and staff. (More)

Picture of week. Sneak a peek. Brian Burnett, vice chancellor, Administration and Finance, explained the layout of renovated laboratory space in the Science Building this week to university leaders. (More)

Eve Gruntfest, professor emerita, Geography and Environmental Studies and researcher at the UCCS Trama, Health and Hazards Center, will work for five months as an invited visiting scientist at the Laboratoire d'étude des Transferts en Hydrologie and Environment at Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France. Her visit is co-sponsored by the Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers and the Department of Geography. She will work closely with geographers, meteorologists and hydrologists on flash flood mitigation research with special emphasis on developing ways that integrate social science, hydrology and meteorology.
