Xiaobo (Joe) Zhou awarded $400,000 grant

Xiaobo (Joe) Zhou, associate professor, Department of Computer Science, College of Engineering and Applied Science, was recently awarded a five-year, $400,000 grant from The National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Early CAREER Development Program. The award, NSF’s most prestigious granted to junior faculty, recognizes early success. It will help support his research project entitled, “Building Resilient Internet Services with Learning and Control.” Read more about Zhou’s award.

"I am extremely pleased Professor Zhou received this award, the first of its kind for our campus," said Ramaswami "Dan" Dandapani, dean, College of Engineering and Applied Science. "This award elevates both UCCS and our college within research communities."

As the Internet and its capabilities continue to grow, Zhou works toward making a higher quality and more available Internet. To do so, he studies issues such as scalability, reliability and availability of networked systems. He also applies machine learning and feedback control techniques for building autonomous resource management in large-scale networked systems. Overall, his approach blends various research techniques to broaden understanding of computer system performance.

Zhou, along with students from the computer science and inaugural doctoral inter-disciplinary security degree program, will conduct research in the new state-of-the-art Science and Engineering labs.

Currently the director of the Distributed and Internet Systems Lab, Zhou is also the director and co-founder of the Engineering (with a focus in security program) doctoral degree. Earning his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in computer science from Nanjing University, Zhou joined UCCS in 2003. He received early tenure this year.

The NSF Early Career Development Program supports early career-development activities of teacher-scholars who effectively integrate research and education within the context of the mission of their organization. The Foundation expects such activities to be the start of a lifetime of contributions integrating research and education, which will ultimately benefit the whole of society.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, is one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The University offers 30 bachelor’s degrees, 19 master’s and five doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 8,400 students annually.
