U.S. News: UCCS sixth in the West, engineering lauded. Undergraduate engineering at UCCS is among the best in the nation and the quality of all programs make the campus among the best public universities in the Western United States, according to the editors of U.S. News and World Report. (More)

President shares budget news, views. Another $81 million cut to higher education, $30 million of which will be borne by CU, was the subject of President Bruce Benson’s memo to faculty and staff this week. See the memo.

Science and Engineering Building dedication ushers in new era. More than 500 faculty, staff, students – including youngsters from the Family Development Center – attended Aug. 6 dedication ceremonies for the newest, largest and most expensive building at UCCS. The Science and Engineering Building earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. (More)

H1N1. What can I do? Stephanie Hanenberg, director, Student Health Center, offered the campus community tips this week to prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus, including getting an annual flu shot, washing hands and staying home if you get sick. See the memo.

Welcome home parade. UCCS ROTC cadets will participate in a downtown Colorado Springs parade Saturday. To join or support them, meet at Four Diamonds at 7 a.m. for a carpool or near the Pioneer’s Museum, 215 S. Tejon.

Fall staff breakfast. A breakfast is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3, on the University Center Upper Plaza to celebrate the fall semester with food, fun and friends. Swaby captivates at convocation. Mixing personal anecdotes with references to freshman common reading “The Last Lecture,” Barbara Swaby, professor, Education, garnered the attention of the newest members of the campus community Aug. 19 during convocation ceremonies. Media Services captured the event, Web Services made the video available online at www.uccs.edu/convocation

UCCS accepts Steel & Silver Series trophy. A trophy to the winner of an athletic and academic competition between the UCCS and Colorado State University-Pueblo was awarded to UCCS at a busy downtown street corner Wednesday afternoon. (More)

UCCS-based CU Foundation fundraisers celebrate record year. Led by a $5.5 million anonymous gift to support student scholarships, CU Foundation fundraisers based at UCCS celebrated a record fund raising year in July. (More)

Elementary security. The Center for Homeland Security, part of the National Institute of Science, Space and Security Centers at UCCS will help evaluate security Academy School District 20 elementary schools this fall as part of an ongoing effort to improve district security. (More)

Croatian university is new partner. UCCS will work as a partner to the University of Zagreb, Republic of Croatia, to help build an Eastern Europe Center of Excellence in Homeland Security. (More)

CU System garners record sponsored research funding. University of Colorado researchers across four campuses received more than $711 million in sponsored research funding in fiscal year 2008-09, a record high that reaffirms CU’s position as one of the top public research universities in the United States. Governance groups retain coverage. With the termination of Silver & Gold Record, the activities of UCCS governance groups will be covered by Communique. Faculty Assembly, Staff Council and Professional Exempt Staff Association meetings will be attended by Ron Fitz in order to keep the campus apprised of faculty and staff issues and concerns.

In Memory

Frederick McFadden. Professor emeritus Frederick McFadden died Aug. 9 in Colorado Springs. See the obituary as published it the Colorado Springs Gazette.

Robert Bess. Former UCCS administrator Robert Bess died July 20 in California. See the obituary as published in the Sacramento Bee.

Josh Green, a UCCS student, died Aug. 20 in Colorado Springs. See the statement issued by the university.

Mary Enzman-Hines, professor, Nursing, was recently selected as president of the American Holistic Nurses Association. She is scheduled to serve until 2011.

Steve Dewey, police officer, received a Commander’s Commendation, from the Colorado Springs Department for his assistance in the arrest of two felony crime suspects spotted near the campus.

Larry Darnall, police officer, was commended by the Colorado Springs Police Department for his assistance in locating a suspect in an attempted homicide.

Who’s New/Changes

UCCS welcomes new faculty. More than 30 new faculty members from various fields and with experiences from across the nation and around the world joined UCCS this fall in tenured or tenure-track positions. Brief introductions follow. In the next few weeks, new instructors will be introduced in Communique. (More)

Donna Moraco, director, Excel Language Technology Center. She has taught German at UCCS since 1999 and previously served as director of the Language Learning Center at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
