Latin Legends in Concert to air on UCCS channel

An award-winning live concert video of three well-known salsa bands will air on the UCCS television station, Comcast 20, on May 5.

David Nelson, associate professor, Communication, along with UCCS students, Mark Bell, media specialist, Media Services, and using campus video equipment, recorded three bands – Tierra, Malo, and El Chicano – as they performed at the Colorado State Fair last August before an audience of several thousand. The bands later worked with Nelson to produce the two-hour concert film.

“Music allows people to cross cultures,” Nelson, who plays the trumpet, said. “I have always been a fan of salsa music and am excited to bring this piece of Latino culture to a broader audience. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, this music just makes you feel good.”

As someone who plays the trumpet, Nelson was initially drawn to salsa when given the opportunity several years ago to play in a salsa band in Chicago. “It was a great experience for me, and a lot of fun.” said Nelson

For his efforts last August, Nelson earned a Telly Award, given annually to recognize creativity in television and film production.

The concert will air three times on May 5, Cinco de Mayo, on Comcast 20. The station is devoted to UCCS programming.
