Options exist, cooperation is key chancellor says in campus forum. If the UCCS faculty, staff and administration work together, the university will survive the current state fiscal crisis and continue its mission of assisting students achieve personal goals, Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak told more than 80 faculty and staff who attended a monthly forum this week. Budget forums scheduled. Forums to review budget plans for 2009-2010 are scheduled throughout early May. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend one of the forums. The forum times and locations are: 3 p.m. May 4, Columbine 317; 8 a.m. May 5, Engineering 103; 2 p.m. May 5, University Hall 109; 9 a.m. May 6, Dwire Hall 204; 3:30 p.m. May 7, Science 192. An all-campus forum is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 12 in the University Center Theater.

Building campus culture through conversation. A day-long exploration of the First Amendment and UCCS as an “Academical Village” is planned for April 16 and will feature Clay Jenkinson, University of North Dakota, in the role of President Thomas Jefferson. Stimulate UCCS. Federal relations, including what the federal stimulus package means for Colorado and for UCCS will be the subject of a special forum scheduled for 2 p.m. today in the University Center Theater. Representatives of the CU System’s federal relations team will make a brief presentation and answer questions. The forum will immediately follow the Faculty Assembly meeting. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

The lights are on: Artgasm. An opening reception is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 1 at the Gallery of Contemporary Art for 19 UCCS senior visual arts students. The student works in sculpture, drawing, painting, digital media, video and photography will be displayed through June 12.

Colorado Math Olympiad celebrates 26th year. More than 300 middle and high school students from around the state will be at UCCS April 17 for the 26th Colorado Math Olympiad. The CMO, chaired by Alex Soifer, professor, Interdepartmental Studies, offers middle and high school students a chance to exemplify their academic skills and to have the opportunity to compete for medals, scholarships and other prizes. College of Business presents Lifetime Entrepreneurship Award. On April 21 at an awards luncheon at The Club at Flying Horse, the college will honor Gary Loo, president and chief executive officer, High Valley Land Company and Chairman, High Valley Group. Loo is probably better known, though, in his former role as President of Current, Inc. (More)

Oversight increases for student government. Robert Wonnett, vice chancellor, Student Success, will have direct oversight and supervision of all activities of the UCCS Student Government, Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak announced Thursday. Additionally, student elections will be delayed to allow time to examine a new constitution for the group. (More [PDF])

Kudos

Amy Silva-Smith, assistant professor, Nursing, received the Claire M. Fagin Fellowship for 2009-2011 from the John A. Hartford Foundation and the Atlantic Philanthropies. The program is designed to build academic geriatric nursing capacity and supports two years full-time advanced research and leadership training. Silva-Smith will examine the effectiveness of an 8-week wellness/walking program to reduce strokes in cooperation with Peak Vista Health Centers.
