Celebrate the green. A celebration of the U.S. Green Building Council’s award of a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold-level certification of the Campus Recreation Center is planned for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 17. An open house with tours, giveaways, food, refreshments and games is planned. There will even be a scavenger hunt to find different LEED points awarded throughout the building and fun educational activities focused on the six areas of LEED certification: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, indoor air quality, materials and resources, and innovation. Official ceremonies celebrating the first green building on campus begin at 3:30 p.m.

Budget update. President Bruce Benson provided an update on CU budget issues and actions with the General Assembly this week. (More)

Public Affairs small, mighty. The smallest of the six academic colleges at UCCS, the School of Public Affairs, has big plans for the future including new degree offerings, community outreach and increased enrollment, according to Terry Schwartz, associate dean. Schwartz recently shared the school’s vision. See her presentation (ppt.)

Professor suggests ‘show the zeros.’ Tom Zwirlein, professor, Business, is bullish on the U.S. economy. “There’s a sale on stocks right now,” Zwirlein, who also directs the Southern Colorado Economic Forum, told more than 50 University Club members who attended a lunch this week. (More)

Ice cream celebrates housing contracts. In recognition of renewal week for student housing contracts, a team of celebrity waiters greeted students this week, offering a scoop of ice cream as an example of on-campus living amenities. (More)

Regents honor Thomas Jefferson Award winners. Raymond Schultz, a Dec. 2008 UCCS graduate, was honored by the CU Board of Regents this week. He joined two CU faculty members and a currently enrolled CU student in receiving the 2009 Thomas Jefferson Award. (More)

Mountain Lion Research Day to highlight university research. Tom Pyszcsynski, distinguished professor, Psychology, will discuss the theories and research developed over the past 25 years and ideas about how they could be used to reduce support for violence in conflict-ridden regions as keynote speaker for Mountain Lion Research Day April 3 at UCCS. Monopoly at Theatreworks. He’s been called “the master storyteller” by the New York Times, and  “one of the finest solo performers of his generation.”   He was a featured guest artist at last year’s national theatre conference in Denver. His work has been seen and acclaimed around the world, and now Mike Daisey brings one of his best known monologues to Theaterworks. He will appear for six performances only March 25-29 in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theatre in University Hall on the UCCS Campus. Auction to benefit campus photo contractor. For more than a decade, local photographer Tom Kimmell’s photos have captured the beauty and activity of UCCS for prospective students, donors and friends of the university. Now, the campus community has a chance to give back. Beginning at 7 p.m. March 26 at the Gallery of Contemporary Art, a group of 20 local photographers will auction their work to benefit Kimmell, who was recently injured in a bicycling accident. A reception begins at 6:30 p.m. Independent columnist Rich Tosches will serve as the auctioneer. Proceeds will help Kimmell with medical expenses. Michael Reyes, student assistant, Office of Student Retention and First Year Experience, was recently selected at UCCS Student Employee of the Year. He will accept the award at the annual campus awards ceremony in May.

UCCS women’s basketball coach Jessika Caldwell resigned her position, UCCS athletic director Stephen Kirkham announced Wednesday. (More)
