Tanks out; event center takes shape

With the removal of water tanks embedded in the hillside between Dwire Hall and University Center, progress on a new Event Center at UCCS will advance quickly, according to Facilities Services.

The tanks were previously used as part of a cooling system for the Science Building, according to Carolyn Fox, university architect, Facilities Services. The cooling system was abandoned years ago but the tanks remained, creating an obstacle.

The excavation will be completed in the next few weeks. The first concrete foundation caissons are now being drilled. In late February, pre-cast concrete walls will be delivered and the new building will quickly take shape.

“Trucks, drilling rigs, cranes and earth-moving equipment will continue to occupy the central portion of the campus,” Fox said. “Please continue to use the temporary walkway and know that we are appreciative of everyone’s cooperation as we continue to work on a very tight site.”
