Certified gold. The Campus Recreation Center at UCCS is the first public building in southern Colorado to earn Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design gold certification status from the U.S. Green Building Council. (Read more)

Weigh in on the future. Operation 60THIRTYFIVE, amulti-faceted, six-month project aimed at developing a regional economic development strategic plan for the Pikes Peak region, began Jan. 28. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and Chris Jenkins from Norwood Development are co-chairs and Angelou Economics, an Austin, Texas based consulting firm, is managing the project. Angelou Economics will be conducting extensive research, the first step of which is an e-survey. Chancellor Shockley-Zalabak encouraged the campus community to take part in this survey and to weigh in on the importance of higher education. Changes coming for campus, federal mail services. Sending mail to UCCS will soon no longer have the feel of a shady operation that’s constantly on the move. (Read more)

Governor, president issue memos; chancellor schedules face-to-face discussions of budget. In the wake of Gov. Bill Ritter’s recommendations to reduce state budgets, CU President Bruce Benson this week issued a memo outlining budget cutting principles CU will follow and Ritter wrote to all state employees. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak plans to meet with faculty and staff to discuss budget issues beginning at 10 a.m. Feb. 4 in the University Center. Sessions are also scheduled for 8:15 a.m. Feb. 9 in Engineering 109, 9:30 a.m. Feb. 10 in Columbine 128, 1 p.m. Feb. 11 in University Hall 109, 9:30 a.m. Feb. 12 in Science 191 and 1:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in Dwire 121. Tanks out; event center takes shape. With the removal of water tanks embedded in the hillside between Dwire Hall and University Center, progress on a new Event Center at UCCS will advance quickly, according to Facilities Services. (Read more)

All in a name. The Office of Student Multicultural Affairs has a new name, M.O.S.A.I.C. (Multicultural Office for Student Access, Inclusiveness, and Community).  While the office of SMA strived to include all students in its outreach and support efforts, it was not apparent that multicultural meant more than ethnic identity. Thus the acronym MOSAIC intentionally addresses inclusiveness, while also maintaining the awareness that individuals and groups still feel marginalized in today’s society. At 11 a.m. Feb. 4, the M.O.S.A.I.C. office, located in University Center 110, will host a renaming ceremony. There will be a buffet and activities to recognize the new name and purpose.  All are welcome.  Please contact Anthony Cordova at extension 3040 with questions.

John C. Miller, professor emeritus, Department of Languages and Cultures, is a senior English fellow for the U. S. State Department at Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey. During the spring semester, he will teach American literature, contemporary American poetry and work with the English language training staff. His assignment began Jan. 26 at the Instanbul Technical University with the English language faculty there. He recently returned from Aligarh Muslim University where he taught as part of a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant.
