UCCS, seven other colleges, present regional front to Colorado Commission on Higher Education. In what is believed to be an historic moment, eight southern Colorado college and university leaders pledged cooperation to improve the long-term future of the region through education last Thursday. Annual fest brings season to campus. Awards for the best homemade or donated baked goods ushered in a new tradition last week as deans, directors, and vice chancellors supplied food for the annual campus recognition ceremony. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak provided the event’s cheer. See the awards for best and most obviously store-bought desserts. (Read more)

Pomp and circumstance. The 2008 summer and fall commencement for undergraduate and graduate students will be Friday, Dec. 19, at the Pikes Peak Center. When the weather outside is frightful. Faculty, staff and students wondering if the campus inclement weather policy is in place have four options this winter, according to Jim Spice, chief, Police Department. The options are: calling 262-3346 for a pre-recorded message, e-mail sent to faculty, staff and student lists, the UCCS web page, and Colorado Springs-based television and radio stations. New plant director begins. A facilities expert with more than eight years experience is the new physical plant director at UCCS. Robert (Rob) Dougherty, previously manager of facilities and events for Compassion International in Colorado Springs, was recently selected as physical plant director at UCCS. He began today. System supports gun ban. In the wake of a lawsuit challenging the CU Board of Regents ban of concealed weapons on campuses, CU System officials issued a statement supporting CU’s current policy, in place since 1970. (Read more)

Chancellor featured speaker for Chamber of Commerce event. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak will be the keynote speaker at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon tomorrow. She is expected to highlight the UCCS Southern Colorado Initiative which focuses on regional cooperation.

Student teachers to travel to Korea. Five student teachers from the College of Education Teacher Education Program will complete an international field experience at the Daegu English Village, Daegu, South Korea Jan. 10-30. Students Shannon Doering, Jennifer Hallock, Mitch Karstens, Natascha Vander Molen, and Malgorzata Trybula will be accompanied by Barbara Frye, assistant professor, Education, and will work closely with full-time instructors at the village. This is the first group of student teachers to travel abroad as part of teacher training.

Training gets upgrade. UCCS faculty and staff will have a new, greatly expanded library of online coursework available beginning Dec. 22. The CU System will change its delivery platform for all employee training from Blackboard to SkillSoft. (Read more)
