Faculty approve new tenure policies. By a vote of 93 to 40, UCCS faculty members approved this week new policies regarding tenure processes. The votes, which represented a 50 percent turnout of eligible faculty, were collected by the Office of Institutional Research and were verified by Jackie Berning, associate professor, Biology, and Kelli Klebe, associate professor, Psychology. The new evaluation system will be implemented over the next several months.

Colorado Health Foundation grant connects UCCS to community elderly. Thanks to a three-year $467,000 grant from the Colorado Health Foundation, UCCS psychology faculty and students training to be clinical psychologists will work hand-in-hand with three Colorado Springs agencies to assist older residents and to provide mental health care integrated with physical health care and social services. Campus values confirmed. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak affirmed UCCS core values of inclusiveness and said discrimination in any form will not be supported or sustained during a Tuesday forum on viewpoint neutrality attended by campus vice chancellors and several faculty and staff. During the forum, Shockley-Zalabak discussed the structure of the Student Government Association constitution and judicial processes in place to give students the opportunity to self-manage appeals and complaints.

New charter school to locate near UCCS. A new charter school, Veritas Academy, will have an open house from 7-9 p.m. Monday in University Center 303. Veritas is a classical, liberal arts charter school for grades 6-12 and will open in Aug. 2009 with grades 6-9 (adding one grade each year thereafter).  The Nov. 10 meeting is open to the public.  There will be a short presentation about the school followed by questions and comments.  For more information, visit www.veritasacademycos.org.

It’s official, no more excuses. Formal opening ceremonies for the Austin Bluffs and Union intersection will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and Brian Burnett, vice chancellor, Administration and Finance, will join with city officials to officially open the latest installment on eliminating excuses for arriving to class late. The ceremonies will be at University Hall.

Student retention to be focus of November forum. The next all-university forum will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the University Center Theater. Barbara Gaddis, director, First-Year Experience, and Robyn Marschke, director, Institutional Research, will present a Retention Recognition Rally to highlight success in retaining students and helping them graduate.

Veteran’s Day celebrated. In honor of veterans, the Office of Veteran and Military Student Affairs will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 10 and Nov. 11 in Cragmor Hall 007.

Commencement is six weeks away.  Undergraduate and graduate students who completed degree requirements this summer and fall will receive diplomas during Commencement Ceremonies beginning at 2 p.m. on Dec. 19 at the Pikes Peak Center.  This will be the second December Commencement Ceremony but the first to begin at 2 p.m.

Holiday declared. UCCS will be closed Dec. 26, for full-time, leave-eligible faculty and staff. As with other leave, this time is prorated for eligible part-time faculty and staff members. The selection of this day will allow campus building systems to be turned down for four consecutive days, increasing energy savings.

 

Who’s New

Ellen Pettijohn, assistant director, Office of Student Retention and First-Year Experience. She previously worked as an administrative assistant in the Psychology Department and was a residence hall director at the University of New Hampshire and Colorado State University. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from CSU.
