Honors program ramps up. Michael Hackman, professor, Communication, is searching for the best and brightest. The director of the new UCCS Honors Program is scouring southern Colorado and the Western U.S. recruiting the program’s first wave of UCCS honors students. (Read more)

Onward, upward. Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter officially removed the UCCS Science and Engineering building from a “construction stop” list this week. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak thanked the governor for his support of science, math, technology and engineering education in southern Colorado.

Faculty share insights into economy, future. United States economic policies must change – and will change – regardless of who is elected president, two UCCS professors agreed during an economic crisis roundtable this week in the University Center. (Read more)

Alcohol education comes to UCCS. A documentary about the 2004 alcohol poisoning death of a CU-Boulder student Gordie Bailey will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Upper Lodge. The free showing, sponsored by Public Safety, the Health Center, Residence Life, Freshman Seminar, the Office of Student Activities and the Office of the Dean of Students, is part of alcohol abuse education efforts at UCCS. Some sections of the film were shot by Pete Schuermann, Monument, on the UCCS campus in cooperation with the Department of Communication. Don’t just eat the candy. Forms to participate in the Colorado Combined Campaign, complete with a small bag of candy corn, arrived in mailboxes this week and will lead to an official kick off lunch scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Oct. 23 in UC 303. The lunch will feature presentations by Pikes Peak Mental Health and the Boys and Girls Club of the Pikes Peak Region. CCC provides a way for Colorado government employees to donate to charities benefiting Coloradans. To attend the lunch, contact Iryse Naro, Public Safety, at inaro@uccs.edu or 3288.

Get ready for 255. As reported in the Aug. 29 edition of Communiqué, UCCS has outgrown its 262 telephone prefix.  As a result, UCCS is beginning its transition away from “262” toward “255.”  Please note, on-campus dialing will not change, as all four-digit department numbers will remain the same. The official change will take place on Jan.1, 2009, there are small steps each UCCS employee can begin to do so the transition goes smoothly. (Read more)

October Chancellor’s Forum date set. The October Chancellor’s Forum is scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 30, in the University Center Theatre. Martin Wood, chief operating officer, University Advancement, along with University Advancement staff, will provide an overview about the University Advancement department and how it can be a resource as well as University marketing and branding updates. The group will also unveil a new website, tools and resources that will soon be available.  

 

 

In Memory

Craig Highline, corporal, Police Department, died Oct. 17 following an off-campus traffic accident near his home in Security. A campus vigil is being planned for 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at the University Center. Teddy bears are suggested in memory of Officer Highline which will be donated to the Campus Holiday Service Project. (Read more)
