Palisades at Broadmoor Park a living learning community. When Sara Qualls, Kraemer Family Professor of Aging Studies, talks about the Palisades at Broadmoor Park, she sees the future. The campus for senior housing that offers independent apartments and patio homes, assisted living, and a memory unit in southwest Colorado Springs represents the latest partnership between a private developer and the university. The partnership provides the opportunity for leading-edge research in helping Americans live their lives to the fullest. (Read more)

Back to the Bluffs week begins. An orange and yellow glow will emanate from El Pomar Center ‘s tower this week as part of the 2008 Back to the Bluffs Homecoming. Events begin with a bonfire in parking lot 4 at 7 p.m. Thursday and conclude with a silent auction to benefit Mountain Lion athletics at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the UC Gym. See the full schedule. Benson to attend University Club. CU President Bruce Benson will attend the Oct. 10 University Club luncheon as its featured speaker. The lunch begins at 12:30 p.m. Earlier in the day, Benson will participate in the Southern Colorado Economic Forum. For more about University Club visit www.uccs.edu/~uclub/.

Hidden talents. Faculty and staff shared their creative sides during a show on the first floor of the University Center. The exhibit began Oct. 1 and will continue through Oct. 31. (Read more)

Expert on citizen responsibility to speak. Paul Loeb, author of “The Impossible Will Take a Little While” and “Soul of a Citizen” will speak at 4 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Science Auditorium. The free event will feature Loeb commentary on social commitment and citizen empowerment and how individuals can make a difference. For more about Loeb, visit www.paulloeb.org.

UCCS kicks off first sustainability summit. UCCS will host its first-ever Sustainability Summit from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in UC Room 303. Five leaders in the local and global sustainability movement will present on topics such as sustainable communities, energy and climate change and the changing role of business. There will also be a local organic breakfast, lunch, sustainability awards, tables staffed by local organizations, short films and more. To learn more, visit www.uccs.edu/sustain.

“Grapes of Wrath” musician sings blues. John-Alex Mason will perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 5 and 12 at the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater in University Hall. Mason, noted as one of the top regional blues performers, composed the music in “The Grapes of Wrath.” Tickets are $10 and available at www.theatreworkscs.org. “The Grapes of Wrath” continues through Oct. 16.

Women to dialogue. Local community members will gather for the Woman-to-Woman Dialogue Series from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Lodge. The event, entitled Empowering Women: Image, Self, and Society, is open to the public. Although tickets are not required, a $5 minimum donation is suggested. Sharon Liese, creator and executive producer of the critically acclaimed documentary, High School Confidential, will present her keynote speech, “Every Girl/Woman Can Save her SELF.” The event will also feature breakout sessions on topics such as media/advertising, sexuality issues across generations, staying healthy and aging, financial self-sufficiency, and global politics.  Please RSVP by Oct. 12 to Daryl Miller, 262-4764, or dmiller4@uccs.edu.

Fitzgerald was recognized in the categories of athlete profile, event coverage and historical feature categories.
