Enrollment nears 8,000. Led by a record freshman class, total enrollment at UCCS is 7,960 this fall, a 4 percent increase from 2007, according to figures compiled by the Office of Admissions and Records. (Read more)

Recruiter for a day: A first-person viewpoint. As the 2008/2009 freshmen class settles into its new role as college students, UCCS recruiters are on the road recruiting a new group of high school seniors. (Read more)

Awesome Dawesome. Telling students to find their passion and to pursue it, Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes mixed personal anecdotes with inspirational messages during her day-long visit to campus today. (Read more)

Year in Preview. UCCS has much to celebrate this year with record enrollment, new faculty and staff, and new buildings, Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak told deans and directors during a Year in Preview. But the university must continue to focus on the needs of southern Colorado if it is to be successful in its quest to become America’s premier regional comprehensive university. Main Wall. When you are more than 40 years old, reminiscing about baby and adolescent pictures can be fun. Faculty and staff looked back to the university’s beginnings this week during the gallery-style opening of a photo exhibit of 43 years of UCCS history now located on Main Hall’s fourth floor. There are 22 black-and-white portraits celebrating the university. See who was responsible for the display and who celebrated it. (Read more)

Is it normal or serious? Are losing the car keys, misplacing a coffee cup or leaving the garage door open normal signs of aging or indicators of more serious problems? UCCS researchers are used to fielding such questions. Their answer is to encourage a low-cost memory screening and psychologist consultation to make the call. (Read more)

Ent to sponsor competition. The ‘Steel and Silver Series,’ an all-sports competition between CSU-Pueblo and UCCS, will get a new look in 2008-09. (Read more)

Constitution Day celebrated. Josh Dunn, assistant professor, Political Science, connected the U.S. Constitution with elections and Judith Rice Jones, reference librarian, Kramer Family Library quizzed the campus this week as UCCS celebrated Constitution Day. So, which famous American did not sign the Constitution? Hint: He was the third president. (Read more)

Speak out: the presidential debates. Co-hosted with the History Department, the Center for Excellence in Oral Communication will host non-partisan watch sessions during president and vice president debates. The first debate is Sept. 26 and will feature Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama discussing domestic issues. The session begins at 6:45 p.m. in the University Center Theater. (Read more)

This is dorm food? A string quartet played, sparkling cider bubbled, and students chatted at the first UCCS Housing Village Formal Dinner on Sept. 17 at The Lodge.  At the final event of more than a month’s worth of new student welcome celebrations, UCCS administrators treated housing village students to a formal dinner. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak served as the hostess, while various staff members were celebrity waiters and waitress. (Read more)

Third flag waves. In addition to U.S. and Colorado flags, UCCS displayed the POW-MIA flag today and will fly it on five other Congress-designated days. Today marked National POW/MIA Recognition Day. On Nov. 11, Veteran’s Day, the POW-MIA flag will also be displayed.

Kudos

Faculty and staff actively engaged in campus research were recognized for their contributions at the 4th Annual UCCS Celebration of Research and Scholarship Thursday in the Lodge.  In particular, 12 faculty members who have raised more than a million dollars in sponsored research were inducted into the “Million Dollar Club.” (Read more)
 
The National Association of College and University Residence Halls selected the “Rockin Welcome Tour” produced by the UCCS Office of Residence Life as a regional winner in a social programming category. (Read more)
