OLYMPIC GOLD-MEDAL WINNING GYMNAST DOMINIQUE DAWES TO SPEAK AT UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO COLORADO SPRINGS SEPT. 19

WHO:

Dominique Dawes, who won a Gold medal with the United States gymnastics team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was inducted earlier this year – along with her teammates on the “Magnificent Seven” – to the United States Olympic Committee Hall of Fame. Dawes was a three-time Olympian and also won an individual bronze in the floor exercise in 1996 and a team bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She was the first African-American female gymnast to earn an individual Olympic medal. Dawes now works as a motivational speaker, part-time coach, broadcaster and spokeswoman for issues relating to women’s and children’s health and fitness.

WHAT:

Dawes will speak at UCCS and join in on a number of campus activities. She will also speak to students at Liberty High School. A complete schedule is as follows:

  • 7:30 a.m. – The Lodge
    Dawes will speak at a School of Public Affairs breakfast
  • 9:30 a.m. – Liberty High School
    Dawes will speak to a group of approximately 200 students
  • 10:50 a.m. – University Hall 133
    Dawes will speak to Lisanne McNew’s Sports and Leisure Studies class
  • 11:30 a.m. – The Lodge
    Dawes will attend a Student Leadership Luncheon
  • 3 p.m. – Soccer field
    Dawes will attend a meet and greet with Student Athletic Advisory Council during UCCS women’s soccer game

Dawes will be available for interviews. Media are asked to RSVP if they plan to attend.
