Pandemic flu discussion drives cooperation. Mental health needs during a pandemic flu disaster was the subject of a July 7-10 conference presented by the UCCS Trauma, Health and Hazards Center in cooperation with the Colorado Department of Human Services and US Northern Command. (More)

Business Journal lauds College of Business in campus fete. Readers of the Colorado Springs Business Journal voted the UCCS as having the best business school in Colorado as well as the best place to earn a master’s of business administration degree. (More)

Nine credits, no charge. Faculty and staff members will have the opportunity to take up to nine semester hours of either undergraduate or graduate-level courses with tuition waivers as part of an expanded benefit to university employees. (More)

CU assesses initiative. Some CU admissions programs and donor-sponsored scholarship would have to be modified if Colorado voters pass the Colorado Civil Rights initiative, according to an analysis. (More)

Regents select chair, approve 08-09 budget. The University of Colorado Board of Regents approved a $2.4 billion operating budget for fiscal year 2008-09 and selected Regent Steve Bosley as its new chair June 5 during a regular meeting on the UC Denver Anschutz Medical Campus. (More)

Faculty to lead Graduate School, research efforts.  Two prominent UCCS faculty members will take over leadership roles within Academic Affairs with the beginning of the Fall 2008 Semester. Jenenne Nelson, professor, Nursing, will become dean of the Graduate School with the start of the academic year.  Michael Larson, El Pomar Chair of Engineering and Innovation, will become associate vice chancellor for research and innovation.  (More)

CU, Denver Scholarship Foundation combine forces. A July 21 press conference announced a new partnership to provide scholarships for financially needy Denver Public Schools graduates to attend CU campuses. (More)

Kudos

• Judith Rice-Jones, senior instructor, Kraemer Family Library, received a $1,000 grant from the Japanese-American National Museum and attended the national diversity conference “Whose America? Who’s an American? Diversity, Civil Liberties and Social Justice” July 3-6 in Denver.

In Memory

Jacquelyn “Jackie” Beyer. A campus memorial service is planned at a later date for Jacquelyn “Jackie” Beyer, professor emerita. Beyer, who came to UCCS in 1970 and helped to found the Geography and Environmental Studies Department, died July 22. (More)

Denys Volan. A retired faculty member whose tenure with the university preceded the founding of UCCS died July 15. Denys Volan directed the Colorado Springs Extension Program 1952-1955 and coordinated evening classes at military installations, at Memorial Hospital, and in District 11 buildings, before the campus was formed. He later taught history at UCCS, retiring in 1980. (More)
