Summer enrollment even. UCCS summer enrollment increased 2 percent increase from last year, according to figures released following a June 16 census by the Office of Admissions and Records.For Summer 2008, there were 2,839 students who enrolled in summer classes, a 57 student increase from the 2,782 students who enrolled a year ago. UCCS to accept Steel and Silver Award. The first presentation of a traveling trophy between UCCS and Colorado State University-Pueblo is scheduled for 3 p.m. July 1 on one of Colorado Springs’ busiest street corners. (More)

UCCS Mountain Lions winners on and off the court. Jessica Stewart led the UCCS Mountain Lion volleyball team to its first trip to the NCAA Tournament with more than 600 assists last season. But the senior setter from Strasburg knows the number that will determine her future is the 4.0 GPA she earned for the Spring semester as a history major and communication and film studies minor. Festival celebrates freedom, justice, diversity. The first Juneteenth Festival at UCCS, organized in partnership with the African-American Voice newspaper, was June 14 on the University Center upper plaza. (More)

CU contributes to Colorado in many ways. The University of Colorado system contributed $4.7 billion to the Colorado economy in 2007, including $3.7 billion in direct payroll, construction and technology expenditures, according to an economic impact report. (More)

New tradition begins at 34th Commencement. There was something new at the university’s most time-honored ceremony this year. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak wore more than a pound of new ceremonial jewelry -- bling in the parlance of students – as she delivered the commencement address and shook the hands of those who earned degrees.  (More)

New NISSSC leader selected. A public affairs executive who assisted in the creation of U.S. Northern Command will lead the National Institute of Science, Space and Security Centers at UCCS. (More)

Master’s in education approved. The CU Board of Regents approved a proposal that will allow the UCCS College of Education to offer a Master of Arts in Leadership in Education at its June meeting. (More)

Institute to spur innovation, entrepreneurial activity. UCCS will establish the El Pomar Institute for Innovation and Commercialization to encourage university and community partnership in bringing new ideas to the region. (More)

Show features work of new faculty. Through Aug. 7, the Gallery of Contemporary Art will feature the work of Matt Barton, assistant professor, Visual and Performing Arts, and Corey Drieth, assistant professor, Visual and Performing Arts. (More)

UCCS to host EduStat University. Robert Marzano, renowned education analyst lauded for his critical examinations of curriculum design and implementation strategy, will deliver the keynote address at EduStat University 2008 July 15-17 at UCCS. (More)

In Memory

Frank Black, who served as the veterinarian for the UCCS Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee  since 1987, died May 4. (More)

Memorial services for Madolia Mills are scheduled for 3 p.m. June 30 in front of Columbine Hall. Mills was a lecturer in Geography and Environmental Studies from 1993 to 2000. She died Dec. 7, 2007. For information, contact Ariadna Coffman, acoffman@uccs.edu.

Kudos

Promotions and tenure announced. The CU Board of Regents approved tenure for 11 faculty members at the June 4 meeting and promotions were awarded by Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak to 13 individuals for the 2008-2009 academic year. The board will consider additional tenure awards at the August meeting. (More)

CU President’s Office honors UCCS program for student success. The aerospace engineering and physics departments at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the chemistry department at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs are the winners of the first annual President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Leadership in Student Success. Student Success reorganizes, adds new staff members. Key positions in the Division of Student Success will be filled with new personnel in the next few weeks as part of a reorganization announced by Robert Wonnett, vice chancellor, Student Success. (More)
