Chancellor cautiously celebrates. Citing details of the best UCCS budget in the past decade, Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak celebrated with faculty and staff Tuesday as part of her April Chancellor’s Forum. Reviewing campus priorities that are aligned with the Strategic Plan, Shockley highlighted compensation rates for faculty and staff, tuition increases and new construction funds allotted to the university as part of the final actions of the Colorado General Assembly. Firefighters get help from Trauma Center. Firefighters, whether responding to fires or car accidents, are often faced with emotions that can have lasting effects.  But they are not alone. The UCCS Trauma, Health and Hazards Center is helping firefighters deal with the unusual job stresses they face. CU Foundation trustees visit. Trustees of the CU Foundation, CU Foundation leaders, as well as CU President Bruce Benson, and chancellors of the Denver and Boulder campuses, visited UCCS today as part of the CU Foundation’s board meetings. The guests boarded buses for campus tours and heard presentations including Michael Larson, El Pomar Chair of Engineering and Innovation, and Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak. Thursday night, the CU Foundation hosted key donors on campus. John Herrington, class of 1983, and a retired astronaut, and Terry Garrett, a current mechanical engineering student who wants to be the first blind astronaut, talked about their experiences at UCCS past and present. Accomplishments to be lauded. The annual campus awards ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. May 6 at the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theatre in University Hall. Campus-wide, as well as college-specific, recognition will be given to faculty, staff and students. Refreshments will be served.

Looking back, seeing forward.  Campus deans, directors, and academic department chairs will have the opportunity to review the successes of the past year and learn about upcoming projects during Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak’s annual “Year in Review” sessions scheduled for noon on May 7 and 8 a.m. May 8. Deans, directors and chairs are encouraged to select a session and respond  to exec1@uccs.edu by Monday.

Olympians they weren’t. Colorado Springs may be an Olympic city but UCCS faculty and staff demonstrated why they work in education Friday during the first-ever faculty/staff games. See “Office Chair Shuffleboard,” and “Waste not Want Not.” (More)

• Sonja Hartshorne, accounting technician, Bookstore.  Hartshorne was recognized this week for performing the Heimlich maneuver on Carla Fleury, bookstore manager, during a choking episode.
