UCCS selects first provost from within ranks. Margaret “Peg” Bacon, the interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at UCCS, will have the interim removed from her title effective July 1, Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak announced Wednesday. (More)

Ritter visits campus, shares idea for building education. Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter revealed both a global viewpoint and personal insight into education during a broad-ranging discussion with community business and education leaders on campus Thursday. (More)

UCCS taps sociology professor to lead diversity efforts. Kee Warner, interim associate vice chancellor for diversity, will fill the post permanently beginning July 1, Peg Bacon, interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, announced Thursday. (More)

Colorado Math Olympiad celebrates 25th year. More than 300 middle and high school students from around the state were on campus today for the 25th Colorado Math Olympiad. (More)

Communication conference draws national crowd. Students from 33 colleges and universities will convene on the UCCS campus today and tomorrow to participate in the 7th Annual National Association of Communication Centers Conference. (More)

Commencement volunteers needed. Volunteers are needed for Spring Commencement scheduled for 11 a.m. May 23 at the World Arena. A single ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students is planned. To volunteer, contact Tina Collins, program assistant, Dean of Students Office, tcollins@uccs.edu, or 262-3258.

April Chancellor’s Forum date set.  The April Chancellor’s Forum is now scheduled for 1:30 p.m. April 29 in the UC Theater. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak will provide an update on the university budget and actions by the Colorado General Assembly.

“Who died?” asked Kathy Griffith, chief of staff, Chancellor’s Office as a parade of co-workers bearing flowers surprised her with the Outstanding Staff of the Year Award this week. Griffith, along with other award winners, will be recognized at the annual Campus Awards Ceremony beginning at 3:30 p.m. May 6 in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater in University Hall. (More)

Liberty Day lessons delivered by fifth graders. “Do you know what is guaranteed by the eighth amendment,” asked the youngster visiting a campus office this week before whispering “look on page 23” in response to a blank stare. Precocious students from Keller Elementary quizzed faculty, staff and students and distributed copies of the U.S. Constitution. In the process, they got a grand campus tour. (More)

Kudos

  • Monroe “Mac” McDade, custodian, Facilities Services, was honored by Goodwill Industries Thursday for his efforts to support individuals with developmental disabilities. McDade received the Extending Goodwill Award at the Goodwill Industries dinner at the Broadmoor Hotel.
  • The UCCS Matrix Center for the Advancement of Social Equity and Inclusion will receive the 2008 President’s Diversity Award in the academic/administrative unit category. An award reception is scheduled for 2 p.m. May 5 in the President’s Office, 1800 Grant, Denver.
  • Jacquelyn Beyer, professor emerita, Geography, will receive the Association of American Geographers Enhancing Diversity Award tomorrow at the AAG Annual Meeting in Boston. (More)
