Provost candidate to visit. Ginger Phillips MacDonald, associate vice chancellor for organizational planning, University of Washington, Tacoma, will visit campus Monday and Tuesday. She is a candidate for the position of provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. Her presentation to the campus is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday in the University Center Theater. Rochester Institute of Technology selects Haefner. Jeremy Haefner, dean, Engineering and Applied Sciences was announced this week as senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology. (More)

Big cat coming. Big Cat Serenity Springs, a Calhan-based animal rescue group, will visit UCCS Student Government at 9:45 a.m. Friday to encourage students to consider volunteer opportunities with the organization. But this won’t be a typical sales pitch. Organizers will bring a 165-pound leash-trained male mountain lion to close the deal. (More)

Benson honored, focused on funding. President Bruce Benson wrote faculty and staff this week and credited his CU education with his success and pledging to ensure others have similar opportunities. Benson will visit UCCS in April. (More)

Engineering and Applied Science to ink agreement. UCCS and Pikes Peak Community College leaders will sign agreements in ceremonies scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Engineering Building. The agreements will ease credit transfer for engineering students at both campuses.

Café serves variety. Michael Larson, El Pomar Endowed Chair of Engineering, will present “Development of a Medical Device for Laser Tissue Fusion: An Example of Invention at the MIND Studios” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Poor Richard’s Bookstore, 320 N. Tejon. The presentation is part of Café Scientifique. For April, Rebecca Laroche, associate professor, English, is scheduled to talk about early modern women’s ownership of English herbals.

Dean candidate to visit. Catherine Earl, chair of nursing, Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, will visit campus Monday and Tuesday. She is a candidate for the position of dean, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Her campus presentation is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. Monday in University Hall 109. (More)

RecycleMania. At the halfway mark (five weeks) of a national competition among universities to recycle waste material, UCCS is now 35 of 400 schools in the grand champion competition with a 25 percent recycling rate and 27 in the waste minimization category with seven pounds of waste recycled per person. According to Linda Kogan, sustainability coordinator, Facilities Services, UCCS is lagging CU Boulder in the competition.

Kudos

Mike Belding, IT professional, Information Technology, is Employee of the Quarter. A 1985 UCCS graduate, Belding joined the computing staff in 1988. He is now the user services manager. Belding credited his colleagues and their work for allowing him to receive the award.

Christopher V. Hill, professor, History, recently published “South Asia: An Environmental History,” a chronological study of the Indian Subcontinent that emphasizes the effect of humans on the environment and the influence of nature on the evolution of human society.
