Kenneth Gurrera

Portrait of Kenneth GurreraFuneral services for Kenneth Gurrera, 45, structural trades, Facilities Services, are scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18 at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 331 Main St., Security, 80911. A visitation is scheduled on Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dove-Witt Mortuary, 6630 S. Highway 85-87.

Gurrera, a UCCS employee since 2001, died at home Feb. 14. He had been on medical leave from the university for approximately two months.

“We are deeply saddened by Ken’s loss,” Dave Willower, director, Physical Plant, said. “Our condolences are extended to his family and his friends, many of whom were at UCCS.”

Gurrera was well-known on campus for his versatile skills and outgoing personality. He was an accomplished carpenter and an electrician’s apprentice. Some remember Gurrera’s skills being put to use in 2005 when he created a 20-foot-tall mock up of an obelisk displayed in the middle of Austin Bluffs Parkway. Gurrera, while not one to take center stage, enjoyed the spectacle of camera crews circling and motorists gawking at the plywood-and-Styrofoam curiosity.

Notes of condolence and flowers may be sent to Shaye Gurrera, 512 Windsor Lane #56, Fountain, 80817 or the church. She will also receive friends at the home following the celebration of Ken’s life.
